Yesterday it was 10
years since Geoff & I officially started dating. For those of you who
haven’t heard it, here’s the story. We had been good friends in high school,
particularly in year 12 but never got any further. For a year after school we
hung out all the time but still he didn’t ask me out. But he had been there for
me through everything in the meantime. He drove me to countless job interviews
before I got my license, he helped me move out of my parents house, and he
talked me through many teenage meltdowns.
Finally after a year
of hanging out whenever we could, Geoff came round to my place one night after
an Army Reserve night & was still in uniform. That may or may not have
tipped the scales in his favour! ;) We chatted…. and chatted… and chatted…..
and at some point we kinda said something along the lines of… “huh. So where
are we? Did we just decide we’re going out now?” We both agreed that’s where we
were & just like that we were officially together! We came to the consensus
that we had become official sometime over that night of talking so we generally
agree that our anniversary is around midnight between 22nd & 23rd.
A few days later we
were getting together with some other friends from school and decided it would
be funny if Geoff came up & kissed me when he arrived to see everyone’s
reaction. It was kind of funny – it was an uncoordinated, both of us not
knowing which way to turn kind of kiss. But nobody saw it. Somehow they all
totally missed it. Still not sure how on earth that happened. Finally someone
noticed we were holding hands and then we were official & public. He gave
me a proper first kiss later as we were leaving :) On Australia Day we had our first official
date when we went to see the fireworks & the rest is history!
In that ten years
here’s some of what’s happened….
- Geoff has held one job (over several locations) the whole time plus a small business & some temp jobs during holidays. I, however, have had 5 different main jobs plus about 6 casual/temp type jobs – often at the same time.
- We have both studied & finished diplomas/degrees.
- I lived in 4 different houses before we got married, and we have lived together since then in another 4 different houses, including buying our first home in 2010.
- We have had 6 different cars, (1 suffered major engine catastrophes & 2 were written off in accidents. Not my fault I swear.)
- We have travelled to 3 other countries together, including our honeymoon in Thailand.
- We have had 3 beautiful children, one of whom has just started school! Unbelievable.
This is the earliest photo I could find of the two of us – its on my 20th birthday at movie world about 10 months after we started dating.
Here’s a photo from my 21st (a 20's theme party) – when we announced our
engagement. Geoff proposed a few days before my birthday so that we could
announce it at the party. He sent a huge bunch of roses to my work during the
day, then took me to a fancy restaurant on the river (where we had gone for our
first anniversary dinner). We had a little time before dinner and stopped by a
costume shop to pick up our costumes for the party. Geoff told me later that he
was most nervous about remembering which knee he was supposed to kneel on but
the costume shop had a massive picture of a knight on one knee with a princess
or something so he was trying to keep that picture in mind to get it right.
Lol…. Like I would have been worried about which knee he got down on. We sat by
the river for a while before dinner & watched the sunset and Geoff said he
wanted to wait until after dinner but that the moment was just too perfect and
he proposed right then and there. We must have looked ridiculous all through
dinner because we couldn’t stop smiling like crazy. When we told our families the reaction was "about time!"
Love you honey – here’s to another 10 years!
